turn your food waste into compost

While composting is very important to our local and global ecosystem, it can be hard to get started and manage in your backyard.

If you don't have the resources to compost your family's food waste, consider having your compostable trash picked up weekly for a small fee. We provide a bucket for you to store your food scraps in (along with literature on what can and cannot be composted) and we will pick it up weekly and drop off a clean bucket.

You can either donate the compost your food waste creates to a local farm or earn it back to use in your garden.

WHY COMPOST?

reduce pollutants and stormwater runoff

Healthy soils are essential for protecting watersheds. Compost is the most effective way to add organic material to the soil, and doing so can filter out pollutants by an astounding 60-95%! Compost can hold x5 its weight in water and sequesters carbon instead of food scraps creating methane in landfills.

keep food waste out of landfills

30% of food is wasted globally across the supply chain, contributing 8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. If food waste were a country, it would come in third after the United States and China in terms of impact on global warming.

Compost is extremely rich in organic materials that provide essential nutrients to plants and animals. It maintains the quality and fertility of soil and in turn contributes to more nutrient-dense produce. Compost is a mild, slow release, natural fertilizer that won’t burn plants like chemical fertilizers.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1: Register

Registration is open now! Use the button below to sign up now for weekly compost pick-ups for just $20/month.

Step 2: GET YOUR BUCKET

I will coordinate a time to drop off your first bucket so you can start filling up your bucket with food waste before pick-ups start the next week.

Step 3: FILL UP YOUR BUCKET

Fill up your bucket with your family's food waste, as indicated on the "compostables" flyer you'll receive with your bucket. This will tell you everything you can and can't compost.

Step 4: LEAVE YOUR BUCKET OUT FOR PICK-UP

Indicate where you will be leaving your filled compost bucket (mailbox or porch) on the registration form, and I will come pick it up and leave you a clean bucket! Weekly pick-up dates are determined by where you are located in Morgan County.

EARN COMPOST OR DONATE IT to a local farm

Saving the planet and reducing pollution is a reward in itself, but another added bonus of utilizing the composting program is that you can earn a bag of compost back after 6 months of weekly food waste pickups! You can use it in your own garden or landscaping project, or donate it to a local farm for them to use as a chemical-free fertilizer.
